Bestop® Modular Rack System

Article written by Moab Man

Date Added: 05/07/2006

If you drive a short wheel base Jeep then you know that storage space for equipment, especially for an extended trip, is extremely limited.

You know the drill, take everything out to the Jeep, load it up, find you're waaaay to short on space and half your gear is still sitting there! Not if you have the Bestop Modular Rack System.
The first thing we liked about the Bestop® Modular Rack System is the minimal weight. The tray is a thermoformed plastic with rounded corners and has I-bolts mounted at all four corners for strapping down loads.

Before you run away from this product, because it's plastic, let me assure you the tray is not flimsy in the least, and depending on where you want to mount it, it is rated from 75-200lbs.

Here is the best part; this extremely versatile lightweight rack system can be mounted virtually anywhere. Rear trailer hitch, tail gate, over the bed area, and above the sport bars front or rear. (over the rear sport bars 92-present).

And if one is good... 2, 3, 4 or more racks could only be better.

That's right, you can mount as many of these racks on your Jeep as you want. For example, with the additional brackets and trays you could put one tray over the rear bed area and another over the cockpit of the vehicle. This system couldn't get any more versatile or easy to use.

Personally, I chose to mount the tray over the bed area. This gives me a load capacity of up to 200lbs and does not need to be removed to put on the Jeep's top.
Installation
After you have assembled and attached the brackets to the tray, the installation on the vehicle takes nothing more than four hand bolts to crank down the metal clamp system.

Final Thoughts

I want to get the negative out of the way on this otherwise great product. I really can't bring myself to trust the little I-bolts located at the four corners. I cannot say how much these I-bolts can handle, and maybe my concerns are not justified, nonetheless I would not use them to secure anything heavy that really needed cinched tightly. Heavier items can be strapped down TIGHT by going through the large round holes in the bottom of the tray.

Now, with that out of the way. This rack has made life much easier on the trail. I'm no longer overstuffing the rear of the Jeep. I can put more frequently needed supplies on the rack within easy reach and bigger, less often needed supplies in the bed.

Bestops® rack system is not the only one on the market. There are others made completely of metal, but with the metal construction comes additional weight that I simply didn't want to add.
